Built to last, these unisex boots are constructed using the Goodyear welt method and heat-sealed to the sole for ultimate durability.
The 1460 Boot is crafted from highly durable leather and rests on an oil and fat-resistant AirWair sole, offering excellent abrasion and slip resistance. To maintain their quality, use Dr. Martens Wonder Balsam to protect the leather and keep them clean, soft, and supple.
Dr. Martens has a legendary reputation. It all started in 1945 near Munich, Germany when Dr. Klaus Maertens injured his foot while skiing in the Bavarian Alps. Seeking a more comfortable walking experience during his recovery, he designed a shoe with an air-cushioned sole. Using old rubber tires, he developed sole units with trapped air compartments. He shared his prototype with his inventor friend, Dr. Herbert Funck, and together they decided to produce and distribute the shoes.
The shoes not only solved the doctor's immediate problem but also gained popularity in Germany. In 1959, Dr. Maertens and Dr. Funck recognized the need for a company to expand the production and distribution of their shoes, then known as Dr. Maertens, worldwide. Initial attempts to convince manufacturers of the air-cushioned sole's potential were met with skepticism. However, the R. Griggs Group in England, located in Wollaston village, embraced the idea and created the first work boot with this revolutionary sole.
On April 1, 1960, they produced the first cherry red eight-eyelet work boot, which was named 1460. To enhance brand recognition in England, the name was changed to Dr. Martens. The range was branded as AirWair, and the rest is history.
