Dr. Martens is a legendary brand that has a remarkable history. The story started in 1945 near Munich, Germany when Dr. Klaus Maertens injured his foot while skiing in the Bavarian Alps. To make walking easier during the healing process, he created a shoe with an air-cushioned sole. He used old rubber tires to construct soles with closed compartments that trapped air. He showed his prototype to his friend, engineer and inventor Dr. Herbert Funck, and they decided to develop and manufacture the shoes.

Not only did these shoes solve Dr. Maertens' immediate problem, but they also gained popularity in Germany. By 1959, they realized the need for a company to produce and distribute the shoes, which were initially called Dr. Maertens, in other parts of the world. Many manufacturers initially rejected the concept of an air-cushioned sole, considering it a short-lived gimmick. However, the R. Griggs Group in Wollaston, England, chose to embrace the idea and created the first work boot with the revolutionary sole.

On April 1, 1960, the first cherry red eight-eyelet work boot was produced and named 1460. To appeal to the English market, the brand name was anglicized to Dr. Martens. The range was branded as AirWair, and the rest is history.
