About this item: Dr. Martens is an iconic brand that has a fascinating origin story. In 1945, near Munich, Germany, Dr. Klaus Maertens injured his foot while skiing in the Bavarian Alps. To ease his walking during the healing process, he designed a shoe with an air-cushioned sole. Using old rubber tires, he created soles with closed compartments that trapped air. He shared his prototype with his friend, Dr. Herbert Funck, an engineer and inventor, and together they decided to develop and produce the shoes.
The shoe not only solved Dr. Maertens' immediate problem but also gained popularity in Germany. In 1959, they realized the shoes, initially called Dr. Maertens, needed a company to produce and distribute them worldwide. Although many manufacturers initially dismissed the idea of an air-cushioned sole as a passing fad, the R. Griggs Group in Wollaston, England decided to embrace it by creating the first work boot with this revolutionary sole.
On April 1, 1960, they produced the first cherry red eight-eyelet work boot, which was named 1460. To better market the brand in England, the name was anglicized to Dr. Martens. The range was then branded as AirWair, and the rest, as they say, is history.
