Dr. Martens has a legendary history. It originated near Munich, Germany in 1945 when Dr. Klaus Maertens injured his foot while skiing in the Bavarian Alps. To make his walking easier during the healing process, he invented a shoe with an air-cushioned sole. He used old rubber tires to create soles with closed compartments filled with air. He shared his invention with his friend, engineer/inventor Dr. Herbert Funck, and they decided to develop and manufacture these shoes.

Not only did these shoes solve Dr. Maertens' immediate problem, but they also gained popularity in Germany. In 1959, they realized the need for a company to produce and distribute their shoes, then known as Dr. Maertens, worldwide. Initially, many manufacturers dismissed the idea of an air-cushioned sole as a temporary trend. However, the R. Griggs Group, located in Wollaston, England, decided to embrace the concept and created the first work boot with this revolutionary sole.

On April 1, 1960, they produced the first cherry red eight-eyelet work boot, which was named 1460. To better market the brand in England, it was anglicized to Dr. Martens. The range was then branded as AirWair, and the rest is history.
