Dr. Martens, a legendary brand, has a fascinating origin story. It all started in 1945 near Munich, Germany, when Dr. Klaus Maertens injured his foot while skiing in the Bavarian Alps. To make walking more comfortable during his recovery, he came up with the idea of designing a shoe with an air-cushioned sole. Using old rubber tires, he created soles that trapped air in closed compartments.

Dr. Maertens shared his prototype with his friend, Dr. Herbert Funck, who was an engineer and inventor. Both of them decided to develop and manufacture these innovative shoes. This shoe not only solved the doctor's immediate problem but also gained popularity in Germany, selling well.

In 1959, Dr. Maertens and Dr. Funck realized the need for a company to produce and distribute their shoes, which were then known as Dr. Maertens, in other parts of the world. Initially, several manufacturers rejected the concept of an air-cushioned sole, considering it to be just a passing fad. However, the R. Griggs Group, based in the English village of Wollaston, embraced the idea and created the first work boot with the revolutionary sole.

On April 1, 1960, the first cherry red eight-eyelet work boot was manufactured and given the name "1460." To make the brand more appealing in England, it was anglicized to Dr. Martens. The collection was branded as AirWair, and the rest is history.

Dr. Martens continues to be renowned for its high-quality leather shoes with air-cushioned soles, lace closure, slip resistance, and classic DNA. These shoes have become an iconic symbol of comfort, durability, and style, loved by people all over the world.
