In 1959, Dr. Maertens and Dr. Funck realized the potential of their creation and decided to establish a company to produce and distribute the shoes worldwide. Initially named Dr. Maertens, the shoes were met with skepticism by many manufacturers who viewed the air-cushioned sole as a short-lived trend. However, the R. Griggs Group in Wollaston, England, embraced the idea and created the first work boot with the revolutionary sole.

On April 1, 1960, the first cherry red eight-eyelet work boot was manufactured and given the name 1460. In England, the brand was marketed as Dr. Martens, a name chosen to better resonate with the English audience. The range was branded as AirWair, and from then on, the brand's success became history.
